What are the different ways to calculate a pet’s age?

We use a few different ways to work out how many "pet years old" your pet is.

Traditional

This uses the classic 1 human year = 7 pet years formula. Pick this if you just want to divide each human year into 7, and celebrate 7 well-deserved birthdays every year.

Veterinary

This reflects the kind of formula you'll often see on a poster at the vet. It makes the assumption that pets age more in their first year or two, and then slow down as they get older.

Scientific

Based on scientific research comparing molecular aging in dogs and humans (DNA methylation), this method uses a more precise calculation based on how dogs' DNA ages to figure out where in their lives dogs are biologically compared to a human:

dog age = 16 ln(human years) + 31

With this formula, dogs age much faster initially (~31 years in their first year!), but then slow down considerably.

It also takes into account a dog’s weight, since small dogs tend to live longer than bigger ones. This uses a generalised trend across a large number of breeds to calculate how the effect of weight on longevity, and combines it with the above "methylomic" method.
